Vodacom

When most people hear the term Virtual Reality (VR), they think about games, but the technology is being put to use in many other applications. VR is a great way to allow customers to get a “hands-on” experience, allowing them to see and live the product or solution they are purchasing.

When Vodacom decided to showcase its fibre offering through a VR tour for potential customers, the telecoms giant called on CubeZoo to make it happen. CubeZoo was given only four weeks to complete the project, but quickly rose to the challenge.

Context

Our aim was to encapsulate Vodacom's core values of connectivity, reliability, and technological advancement, ensuring that every aspect of the virtual reality tour reflected the essence of the telecom giant and its fibre offering.

What We Did

In crafting the immersive VR experience for Vodacom, we embarked on a journey of deep consultations, immersing ourselves in Vodacom's vision for connectivity and innovation. Our exploration led us to a profound understanding of Vodacom's brand essence, guiding us to curate a palette of dynamic visuals. Paired with captivating illustrations, these visuals evoked a sense of excitement and exploration, inviting users to dive into the world of Vodacom's fibre offerings.

With meticulous attention to detail, we selected sleek typography to enhance the user experience, ensuring clarity and sophistication throughout the VR tour app. This harmonious fusion of creativity and precision goes beyond aesthetics; it embodies a visual narrative that resonates with Vodacom's commitment to technological advancement and customer satisfaction.

Every element of the VR tour was carefully chosen to forge a deep connection with users, empowering them to explore and embrace the possibilities of Vodacom's fibre solutions.

Style Guide

Design Elements

In our partnership with Vodacom, we meticulously designed a digital guide to maintain uniformity across the brand. This ensured that every interaction with Vodacom's VR tour was seamless and enjoyable, aligning perfectly with Vodacom's commitment to providing cutting-edge technological solutions.

User Experience (UX)

In our endeavour to enhance the user experience for Vodacom, we embarked on the development of a mobile app aimed at simplifying the exploration of Vodacom's fibre offerings while integrating innovative tools for customer engagement.

These tools empower users to set goals, track progress, and access tailored content and resources to support their journey towards embracing Vodacom's services.

Our journey began with meticulous planning, starting with the creation of wireframes to lay the groundwork for an intuitive interface. Prioritising seamless navigation and effortless functionality, we focused on essential features and integrated user-centric design principles to ensure that the Vodacom app delivers a cohesive and enriching experience tailored to each user's unique exploration journey.

User Interface (UI)

In refining the user interface for Vodacom's VR tour, our goal was to seamlessly merge aesthetics with functionality.

Drawing inspiration from top-tier digital experiences, we embraced a sleek background enhanced by dynamic bursts of vivid imagery, infusing the tour with vitality and charm.

Emphasising simplicity and a welcoming ambiance, we invited users into an immersive journey filled with captivating designs and interactive features. This harmonious blend of creativity and practicality not only boosted user engagement but also ensured that every interaction with the Vodacom VR tour was both captivating and impactful.

Our Challenge

Delivering a seamless virtual reality user experience in such a short time frame

With less than four weeks to shoot, engineer sound and code a VR application experience, CubeZoo pulled out all the stops, bringing in all available resources and working a number of late nights to meet the deadline. While the video team was on set shooting, the development team and the design team set to work to create an exhilarating and immersive experience.

There was a great deal of debate around what was achievable in such a short time frame, but perseverance and teamwork enabled CubeZoo to deliver a solution that far surpassed the client’s exacting requirements.

In addition to using senior resources on the project, the CubeZoo team found that creating milestones made everyone’s tasks easier. Once the most complex VR journey was mapped, the same code, sound and hotspots were re-used in the other six journeys, making them relatively quick and easy to implement.

Our Solution

Overcoming technology challenges by implementing milestones for the wider CubeZoo team

Timing wasn’t the only challenge faced by the team. Technology challenges cropped up as well. The VR application had to be developed natively for both Android and IOS as a result of the requirement to have the app accessible on multiple devices. CubeZoo decided to work with Unity and develop the app in a hybrid manner for all devices.

The end result was an experience that allowed Vodacom Fibre customers (and potential customers) to journey through fibre lines into different rooms of a house, showcasing how and where the fibre was accessible – from streaming movies and playing online games to controlling appliances offsite.

Bringing customers into the virtual world of the workings of the fibre infrastructure, CubeZoo and Vodacom Fibre not only illustrated the benefits of super-fast connectivity, but enabled people to gain a better understanding of the technology.
